Lynn Farlin

As Director of Religious Education (DRE), I’m responsible for the children’s, youth and adult Christian formation programs at Ascension. I work closely with a wonderful group of dedicated Sunday school teachers, EYC leaders and EYC board members to work towards achieving our Christian education goals. I teach chapel for the day school, serve on the church’s vestry and liturgy commissions, and serve on the day school board. In addition, I’m a Godly Play teacher, EYC leader, and I help out with the acolyte program.

About Lynn

I grew up in Lafayette Hill, Pennsylvania in a family of four that was very active in our church. The church I grew up in was like my second home and I loved everything about it (except that girls were not permitted to acolyte in those days). I attended Bloomsburg University and majored in Biology. However, during my senior year I knew that I wanted something more and decided to go to grad school at Indiana State University where I earned my master’s degree in College Student Personnel Administration. While at ISU I developed a passion for working with student conduct, leadership training and academic integrity and knew I had found my niche. As a result I spent most of my professional life working in the university setting, administering the university’s disciplinary system. It sounds like a dreadful job but it was more positive than you might think and I met some wonderful students (and heard some amazing stories) over the years!

I started working at Ascension as the DRE in 2007 and thought, at the time that I would only be in the position a short time. I had just finished a vestry term as the Christian education commission chair, the existing DRE was resigning, and I needed a break from dealing with university politics so I sort of fell into the position. It’s been an amazing experience and I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to work at Ascension. It’s a wonderful faith community!

When I’m not at Ascension I love to read, or attempt a quilting, stained glass or scrap booking project. My husband Stuart and our children Taylor and Trent have lived in Norfolk since 2002.
