The Reverend Stewart Tabb

My job as rector of Ascension is to invite and encourage the people of Ascension to know Christ and make him known by an inward journey of faith and an outward journey of service to the world in his name.
I believe this is best done through inclusive and loving community, authentic worship, prayerful discernment, and cultivating a sense of joy and gratitude for the many gifts of God found in life, in each other, and in the world.

Dr. Karen Parthun | Organist & Choir Director

Dr. Karen Parthun is a national choral clinician, choral and orchestral conductor, organist and pianist, and has been a music educator in the public schools in Arizona, New Mexico, Montana, and Virginia. She also was a professor of choral studies at the University of Missouri St. Louis and at Arizona State University. Singing in the church children’s choir since age 3, accompanying choirs in jr. high school, and a sacred musician since age 18,  Dr. Parthun is passionate about worship and creating exciting and meaningful worship experiences. 


Her favorite bible verses are: Phil 4:8 ..whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable--if anything is excellent or praiseworthy--think about such things. 


Psalm 100:1-2  Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth. Worship the Lord with gladness; come before him with joyful songs. 

Mark Hattler | Day School Director

I received my BA from the University of Colorado, Boulder in 1985. I have been working as an educator since 1986 when I started tutoring English as a Second Language in Berkeley, California to elementary school students from Asian countries. The following year, I also began teaching preschool at a large, diverse center in Berkeley called the Child Education Center. In the intervening years I tutored high school and college chemistry and biology, substitute taught in grades pre K-12, worked as a teacher assistant in a junior high school in Berkeley, and worked as a naturalist for the Episcopal Diocese of Vermont and their adjoining high school. In addition, I was a stay-at-home dad for my two children and a nanny for my niece. I have enjoyed it all, but I am most proud professionally of my ten years teaching at Evergreen Preschool in Vergennes, Vermont, a school which is accredited at the highest national standards for early education.
